Manipulating Perverse Love

‘Shun-kin’ のレビュー。NY Times

『Mr. McBurney not only has retained this layer, but has also added another voice to the mix, that of a woman (Ryoko Tateishi) narrating the story for a Japanese radio broadcast. Even as we want to focus on the often entrancing stage pictures, the insistent murmur of voices keeps nudging us to look up to the titles to discover what is being said. (Audience members seated at a greater distance from the stage ― I was in Row H ― may find it easier to take in both at the same time.) 』
『The relationship between stern “master,” as Sasuke(Songha CHO) refers to Shun-kin, and devoted student, has an eerie fascination. Sexual intimacy in private coincides with strict formality in public, and Shun-kin’s imperious, sometimes cruel treatment of Sasuke during their lessons bleeds into their erotic life. The social distance between them is effectively indicated by having Shun-kin portrayed by a puppet. She is an object of worship to Sasuke, more an idol than a human being, and yet it is the idol, the remote and superior figure, who ignites his desire.』
